I have been offered a 1941 Chevy one ton dump by a friend of my dad's for $450. The truck is still pretty solid, but someone stuck in a F*** 390 V8 and 4 speed tranny years ago. I have a 216 I can use for it with a bell housing swap and if I find a chevy 4 speed to fit in it. My question is this: This truck has 18 inch wheels and tires and it has a flat frame in the back instead of the humped up frame most 1 tons have. Also, the rear end under this truck is pretty hefty. My dad has helped work on this truck several times over the years and he thinks it might be more of a ton and a quarter instead of just a one ton. Would this be possible? Providing it's in decent running order,you can probably sell the 390 for enough to buy all the replaceables for your 216 install(clutch,water pump,tune up,fuel pump,carb kit,alternator conversion,etc.),maybe a tank of gas,too.Good find! Someone changed out the 18 inchers on the front for later 16 inch rims. I have seen other earlier one tons with 18 inch wheels and tires. Hard to tell really without the body serial number. The ID plate should also have the GVW. With the 8 lug bolts I'm guessing 1 ton.

34 & 35 trucks are the greatest

Too many had the original running gears ripped out for modern parts. You probably see more 49 and later Chevys around here than the earlier ones for some reason. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 237 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2006 Posts: 237 | 1 tons and up had a "flat frame" in back with no hump over the rear axle... so that makes it correct for being 1 ton or larger.
The 18" wheels... well I'm not a pro on this year truck but that usually means it's a 1 1/2 or 2 ton truck.
Nice looking truck. For $450 it's worth it, IMHO.
Figure out what you want to do with it. If you want an original restoration, then you have lots of rare parts to find and buy (big $). If you want a resto/mod then your parts will be cheaper and it will be a more user friendly truck for todays roads. If you want a hot rod... well sell it and buy a 1/2 ton. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 16 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 16 | I have seen other 1 tons from the 30s thru even the early 50s that had 18 inch tires. Dodge is the earliest I have seen to use the more standard 16 inch arrangement. These skinny 18 inch tires do give the truck a neat look and a 16 inch wheel will not fit over the rear brake drums. The at least lets me know the rear end housing is original. | | |
