The 67 I recently bought came with 10" Rallye wheels, and low-profile type tires. The tires are about worn out.

At first I didn't like the wider wheels, but now I'm considering keeping them on the truck.

What's the best size tire to put on a 10" wheel for a 67 Chevy truck without modifying the body?

Also, my mechanic told me that the wider tires can make the truck drive a bit wierd. Does anyone have experience with any of this?

This truck has been altered in many ways, and has what I call "true" power steering. You can turn the wheel with a finger... Pretty nice.

Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

Davey

On my 64 I ran 255/60's on the front and 275/60's on the rear. It filled the wheel wells out pretty good,

I've never had low-profile tires on a truck, but I had them on a sports car for several years. I actually took off my 17" $2500 rims and swapped them for a more conventional set of 16" mags because the low profile tires a) wear out in about 20,000 miles - I burned through three sets of tires in under 3 years, b) cost twice as much, c) have poor traction in adverse weather conditions, and d) let you feel every ripple in the road.

I'll never go back, but ultimately it's your truck. Your driving habits and conditions are likely different than mine, so this is just a little food for thought.

Like 48bigtrucks, I have a 1992 shortbed stepside and put on 255x15x60 front and 275x15x60 on the rear as I drove home from the dealer now 14 years ago. It drives great, handles great, and looks great. Guess you'd say I recommend wide tires. I have 10" rear rims and 8" fronts, no fender clearance problems. I usually get about 50,000 miles on fronts and 40,000 on the rears.

Davey, I'd dump those wide wheels, I'll send you my address so you can send them to me and I'll see to it that they get disposed of properly. (on my '67 GMC) grin Proper inflation is the key to good tire wear. Over inflation and fast driving wears the center tread on a tire.

Thanks for the replies,

Kimberley, I didn't choose the low-profile tires. They were on the truck when I bought it. At first, I didn't like the wide wheels, and my mechanic told me wide tires "might" make the truck drive a bit funny. So, I considered going with 8 1/2" wheels.

I now like the wide rims. But, I do not like the low-profile tires. I want taller tires if I keep them. This is all new to me, so I'm just asking questions from those of you who have more experience.

Keith, you sound like my mechanic. He told me I didn't need the wheels, and could help me get a really good deal on some 8 1/2" Vintage American mags, which I really like.

Hmmm........

You guys ain't gettin' my wheels!!!

BTW, Homer, my mechanic informed me today that whoever "lowered" my truck did it by heating the springs. I might end up jacking it back up with normal/HD springs.

The 255/60's and 275/60's are not low profile tires. They are just wide,
Scott

The trucks look nice with 255/60's & 70's in my opinion especially on the chevy rally & rally 2 style wheels. I had a set of the deep dished rally 2 wheels (had the small retangular holes) w/ 255/60/15's & they looked awesome on my 58 3100 Apache swb stepside but was too close to the inner fender/bed which meant i would have had to cut a 1 1/2 section out or buy wheel spacers. Ol'bolts even originals w/ big wide white walls look mean cool

I've got a set of 10 inch wide wheels which I used to run on a '72 (when it was less than ten years old) and then ran on a '75 for years. Both those trucks are long gone and the wheels now are holding up one of my projects.

I don't recall any problems with rubbing, but neither of the trucks were lowered. I last put tires on these wheels in 1984 and don't remember the size.

I liked the look and ride, but the tires then would sure not be called low profile today.

Thanks OldSub,

Do you remember what size tires you used with the 10" wheels?

I like wide tires all around. I tend to buy all the same size so I can rotate them. I don't car for too low a profile either. I guess it's just what you like the best.

Davey,

I used some 255 70's on my 71 GMC, and I thought it looked fantastic. It wasn't too wide or too short, but it wasn't stock. It was just right for me. 255 70's are a bit taller profile than the 255 or 275 60's, and look nice and meaty. Good luck making your decision.

We're gonna replace the springs as soon as I can afford it. Hopefully in the next month.

Then I'll look at tires. I don't like the low profile tires at all.

Just an issue of money right now.

Thanks J.K. and builder.

I've never owned such a machine as this.

It's gonna be good.

Thanks for the advice and tips.

This will be a very nice looking truck fairly soon.

stevesr,

I hear ya!

There's no telling how many people have altered this truck, or what's been done to it.

We'll have to figure it out as we proceed. Maybe I'll learn a bit as we progress.

Davey
