i'm seriously thinking about getting a new wiring harness for the 50, 3/4 ton. i would like to convert the park lamps to turn indicators. i have two small lamps for turn indicators on the back and other than an extra wire to run to the heater fan, it will be the same as original. i already have a turn signal switch mounted to the steering column.

two questions.

one: what changes are required for the turn indicators/park lamps (dual filiment?)?

two: does anyone have an opinion regarding who carries the best quality cloth wrapped (like original) harness?

i would also like to see if anyone knows anything about the conversion kit for tail lamps to support the larger (21cp bulbs i believe) as well as any war stories from personal experience replacing a harness in an ad truck.

I converted mine to turn/park lights on my 48. I also converted to 12 volts so all I had to do is drill out the spot weld that held the original socket into the housing and spot weld an 1157A socket into it's place. Probably the easiest mod that I've done to the old girl since I've owned it. If you stay 6 volt, do the same as I did with 6 volt bulbs. I can't give any advise on the wiring, I used a harness from a 75 3/4 ton Chevy truck to make the conversion,

When i upgraded my 51 chevy 6volt system to 12 volt. I purchased a whole new wiring harness from jim carters. The wires were marked for all of that , it was really simple. Best thing i ever done was get rid of the 6 volt system. The 12 volt battery really spins that baby over. I did however change all dash bulbs to 12 volt bulbs, head lights, parking, tail light bulbs, dome light, generator. I had to by a voltage reducer(12v to 6v) for the gauges, heater motor, distributor(so the 12 volt did not burn my points up).The six volt starter will be ok to use in the 12 volt system.

Hope this helps,Tim

i'm going to stay with the 6 volt system. i know there are advantages to the 12, but i want to keep it as original as possible.

i've been looking at the jim carter harness. might give them a call tomorrow and see what additional information they can provide.

thanks for your responses guys.

I just finished rewiring my 50 chevy staying with the 6 volt system. I used the wiring harness from chevy duty converted the front turn signals to double filament aftermarket kit from chevy duty, the problem that I ran into was brake lights and turn signals. I went to napa auto and purchased a dual filament 6 volt bulb and wiring socket insert so I have a turn signal that flashes and a brake light that works contained in the same housing if that makes sense,my turn signal would not override the brake light so thats the way I fixed the problem.

I bought dual filament sockets for my '47 a couple years ago. I believe they came from LMC. They fit right in. Mine is 12 volt. I'm not sure if 6 volt bulbs fit in the same sockets. My guess is that they would.
