Well here is the '41 still in the pasture. Now some might think I'm crazy and I know my wife does but I do have a vision. With the '46 I'm picking up I'll have 2 of everything and I think I can build a nice truck between them. I went ahead and took the back fenders home today since they were laying in the bed. What do you guys think so far? Am I crazy?

This one has the optional heater and dual wipers. I noticed on the '46 cab I'm getting that it only has one wiper and no heater.

That is a great looking truck! Look at the areas around the lower door, rocker panels, running boards and such. The doors ain't all busted up, the fenders are not bent into the shape of a map of the Lake Superior, and there's even original (appears to be) window glass.

Good Lord, I don't see big dent ONE in the bed or on the side rails. Did the owner before you haul anything 'sides air?

Start it up and get in the nearest parade!

Are you kidding? What more do you want!?!

It's gonna take a lot of work! Mother Nature's East Coast climate was this trucks worst enemy. I don't think the truck was really ever abused that much. You can tell that from the pic. of the grill I posted earlier. Yes it does appear to have all the original glass. It was last on the highway in 1984.

M Smith,

Looks like a great start to me. You should hurry up and register for the street-rod nationals. The front is already lowered, or as the "rodders" say, "It's in the weeds". Good Luck with your project, and congratulations!

We told you the right one would show up. Best of luck. Follow your dream, someday your wife will be showing it off like it was all her idea.

I guess I don't care for the idea of wrecking two nice old trucks (or more) to make one. Especially to hot rod them. Buy fiberglass, put 'em on all modern frames, add new engines and drive train etc. Leave the "Gennies" alone.

A Perfectly (perfect 100 pt!) original restored 46 PU is worth what, maybe $15K? Not worth the investment to Hot Rod an original.

Just my opinion....What say all?

It's still got the original front end and everything on it is original. I'm probably going to restore it to original condition but it will still take the '46 I have for parts. My next step will be to see if I can bring that old 216 back to life. I'll give it a shot, heck I may can get the old girl cranked up.

Well I say it has a 216 because it looks like one but I should probably get the numbers off it and post them here so you guys can tell me for sure. Where do I need to get the numbers from?

Yes you are crazy and I would like to come and get rid of it for you!!

What an awesome looking truck, and the setting would make a nice calendar picture. I'll bet that old 216 will just purr. There are not too many field finds like that with straight metal and all together. I got my 216 to run after many years of sitting in a field. It gave me a chance to hear it run before I rebuilt it.

I tried to turn the engine over by hand but no luck. I may have to soak the cylinders. What do you guys use? I wish I had gotten a pic. before he dragged it out. It was really back in a briar patch. It was also sitting between two AD trucks. One was a 3/4 ton the other a 1/2 ton. They both looked complete and about the same cond. as this one. I'll definitely try to get it fired up before tearing it down.

Thanks for all your comments! She'll be in the dry from now on and I hope to get that old engine coughing soon. It'll be on the back burner for a while. I gotta get my '57 Bel Air done and the wife's '67 F**D Mustang 2+2 before I can play with the old bolt too much. The main thing is that I've got it! Years from now there won't be anything left out in the fields to restore. All these old Chevy's are getting scarce! I've spent the last 2 days storing most of the '46 up in the attic of my shop. The only thing taht won't be up there is the cab, bed, chassis, engine. Everything else is nicely tucked away in the dry.

Once you are done you should try to get a picture in the same place (the field by the pond), it would look kinda cool having a before and after pic in the same place (I think).

Fill the cylinders with Marvel Mystery oil and let it set. I've had good luck loosening up these motors, after pistons/rings soak for several days. With a BIG screw driver, get underneith and gently pry agains the flywheel ring gear, just a bit in each direction. One old 235 that's running now, would not turn over at all, had to disassemble completely and drive the pistions out. Was rebuldable and a good motor after all that.

Oh, BTW first check along the block behind the generator for cracks before you go grazy with the lube job. Have found many of these that were left full of water and had huge cracks all the way down the manifold side of the block.

OK, I checked for cracks before I started and it looks good all the way around as far as I can see and feel. I know the crack you're speaking of. The '46 216 block has one of those nasty cracks all the way down the side of block. I've got it soaking and I drained the old sludge from the oil pan along with some water. Not a pretty sight. I took the valve cover off and the valve assembly looked real good and only one valve was slightly stuck. It came loose with a little Gibbs and a block and hammer. I can't seem to get the trans. to shift at all. The lever will swivel back and forth sideways but I can't move it in or out of gear which ever it is.

Funny....I have my entire truck minus the cab, chassis and drive train in my basement. Actually is is all boxed up and ready to ship to my new house in Ohio this week. 56 boxes to be exact. The rest is being shipped by an auto transport company because I could not find a box big enough the household moving company would accept.

Good luck with your project! The best so far for me was when my wife walked into our basement to find a completly assembled bed (wood and all) in the basement.
