Plan is change over to 4 bbl with alum intake and maybe holly carb. This has manual choke. any thoughts on this? also considerations on the egr. What should I buy here. Comments welcome from the experts. Gary

Find a Edelbrock or a Quad to rebuild instead. Just my opinion but Holley's are a pain for the street, Scott | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 | | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,437 Moderator - The Electrical Bay | | Moderator - The Electrical Bay Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,437 | buy the edelbrock kit, comes with a cam, intake and carb... works very well...

500 to 600 CFM is more than big enough for a 283. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | Rustyrod has the right idea-the kit is designed to work together. And the main problem with Holley carbs is that they're so adjustable, and being tinkerers by nature, rodders tend to adjust a lot of stuff they don't know the actual function of. I talked to a tech at the Holey Carb trailer at the races a couple of years ago,and he said 98% of what he had to do to "un-f**k" the Holley carbs brought to him consisted of adjusting EVERYTHING back to specs and replacing the occasional power valve or accelerator pump. Personally,I've never had any problem with Holleys except I could never get better than 10 miles per gallon with one. If you want to save money & can rebuild a carb yourself you can find a Q-jet at a swap meet or pull your own parts lot real cheap. You can put in an electric choke if it doesn,t have one. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Also got a comp cam, roller tip rockers (1.5 intake and 1.6 on exhaust), new timing set, reworked power pack heads with 1.82 intake valves and hardened exhaust seats. I plan on using a progressive linkage and will dial in the carbs with new rods and jets.
I'll round off that bolt head....just as soon as I'm done strippin' this screw!

Then second is a cam that will get the F/A mixture moving into and out of the cylinders. Don't overdo the cam. This is a truck and you don't want to kill the low end torque. Now if you find that your starved for F/A then upgrade the intake. | | |
