I hate the gas tank behind the seat in my 65 pickup (shortbed) :confused: . Anybody got any ideas for a different setup other than the 21 gallon between the rails setup that you see advertised in all the restoration parts catalogs?
I wanted to see if anyone had swapped anything of a junkyard vehicle. If so what? maybe side saddle or something out of a van or blazer? Dual tanks???? Come on brains , start workin!!!! :confused:

I used a RCI 16 gallon Fuel cell with sending unit. I bought the tank on ebay. An option maybe

LMC makes a conversion kit to install it between the rear frame rails. Comes with a sender, straps and some hardware. Check it out,

i used a 16 gal univ tank, 14 gauge. this done on a 51 3100. this puppy ain't going nowhere.
there is room under the bed, just behind the cab, w/ the filler neck just infront of the pass rear fender and the tube fits above the frame rail to fit a spout. my spout is the old cab spout turned 180 degrees, welded a (muffler pipe) flare of 2'' to the 1 1/4'' stock filler tube to a gas hose into the 2'' muffler pipe of the gas tank. it hangs off the cross bed rails using 1/2'' all-thread and two 13'' under tank steel bars. all locktite'd and double nutted.

On my 65 I plan to add a fuel cell between the rear frame rails where the spare would go. I have seen guys put Blazer/ Suburban tanks back there. I had a 66 C20 that had dual saddle tanks mounted. It was a very clean mounting job. The tanks were installed on the truck back in the late 60's and were made of heavy gage steel. They had locking fuel doors cut into the bed. It had a switch on the drivers side floor to switch the tanks. I saw a lot of pre '72 trucks out in the western states with that added to them.

I used a fuel tank from "B" body mopars for a between the rails tank on the rear of my 57 and 58 trucks. Had to run a mopar fuel pickup and sending unit and a seperate fuel gauge. I believe I remember my 70ish pontiacs had the same rear center fill as the mopars and might be a good fit.

i was thinking of the spare tire kit and have the fill neck go out behind the liccense plate like the old cars had. anyone seen this done?

hey new guy hear , had a 62 short stepside , bought a 20 gal. tannk and straps from a 1986 buick regal fits right under back rails ,you have to fab some extentions for the back of the straps filler neck comes out center of the bumper works well plus adds weight to the back of your truck

any photos of your installation of the regal tank?

my bumper is set up with trailer ball etc and i'd rather not have filler right there. was there enough room to add a turn to fill from either the side or from the bed?

also, what did you do for sender?

any reason this wouldn't work with what's essentially a '64 gmc shortbed with leaf rear?

the regal tank exit center of bed you could probly find one with filler neck on the side, I ran a new wire all the way back one hot to the sender one ground to frame installed new after market gas guage in console
