Heya folks.

the engine and exhaust details:

'65 c10 - lwb stepside - 1992 5.7l(350) v8

It has a 600 cfm holley carb (mod. 4160) on it - I forgot to mention this originally (added 09/01/2004)

stock exhaust manifold, exhaust, muffler, exhuast... the pipes are separate - no cross pipe

The issue:

When I crank it up, there is some white smoke coming out the left/driver's side exhuast. It does not seem to be coming out the right/passenger's side.

Any idea what this is a symptom of?

Thanks.

Could be a leak in the left side cylinder head gasket.

Run a compression test. Does the smoke start immediately of after it warms up a bit? If it is immediate, bad ring(s), valve guide, compression test will find the ring(s). If after it warms up, water in the combustion chamber, compression test won't find it unless it's the head gasket, that's the good news.

If it's only when cold, it's the heat riser doing its job.

Pull the spark plugs on the left bank & let it sit over night. A pressure tester on the cooling
system would help. Crank the engine over & watch
for water comeing out the spark plug holes.
If there is you have aleaking head gasket or
a cracked head. Usually a can of bar,s leak
in the cooling system will fix it for a while. smile

It may just be a carboned up injector not spraying a good pattern or it could be carbon on the back of the intake valves. If it runs relatively smooth, add some injector cleaner additive to the gas tank and drive it enough to heat everything up. It will take a while if your truck does alot of short trips or stop and go driving.
Just a thought,
Scott

I agree. If it's a small amount of smoke (steam)and goes away after it warms up, I wouldn't give it a second thought. If it's a huge cloud and it continues after it's warmed up, then I'd start looking for ways that coolant is gettin into one or more cylinders on that side.

the '92 engine has a 600 cfm holley carb. (mod. 4160) on it...

Well, I have no had to add any coolant in 6 months? or more, since I had to keep adjusting the flex hose since I could not get it to seat just right.

So, it isn't using/losing coolant/water.

Well, I thought I'd check with you guys. smile

Especially since I need to yank off the intake manifold to fix that oil leak, as mentioned in another post in here - I figured I'd check to see if there is anythign else I need to check/change while I have things taken apart.

Thanks.
