Well, I tried it. Used the Martin Senour" Crossfire" system from my local NAPA store. Guess what? I painted the firewall, rear fender wells and the entire underside of my sub in Forest Green base/clear just to see if I could do it. I got a few runs in the clear on the firewall. Sanded them out and recoated and it came out really nice. Gaining confidence I painted the interior its Tan color with no runs. It looks great. I have the body up on 2 four foot high saw horses so I can stand inside and reach the whole interior. Thanks to all you guys who encouraged me. You know who you are. I am confident I can do a good job on the exterior now. I painted my dash and someof the interior trim parts. I am pretty pleased with the outcome but nowhere near taking the leap into the big exterior panels.
My problem is not application of the paint...it is the prep and body work that is needed. No clue how to even go about it. Nor do I have a deep desire to have the mess in my garage (which is attached to my house).
I used a cheap HVLP system I bought for just over $50. It really worked great for these smaller parts.

You said you used the Martin Senour" Crossfire" system from NAPA store. Sounds like something I could do. Your post gives me encouragement. I'm still waiting for my sheetmetal to get back from the blaster and my barn/workshop to be built but I believe I will also tackle the paint.

My body/paint guy has been reasonable but he does warn me that the prep can be expensive so I take as many parts as I can & derust them using vineger/electrolyte systems then shaker can paint them. Yesterday, I was at the shop & we spoke about the running boards so I'm setting up a derusting station to handle this long part. I must say that reading about what some other bolters do gives me some spine to keep going & try new things. | | |
