The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Outside mirrors problem

I discovered on my 53 1/2 ton that the tops of the new inside cowl panels that were installed cover the guide holes for the outside mirrors. I forgot to mention their purpose before and now I will have to determine exactly where to place the mirrors and use sheet metal screws. Would a paper template from an existing truck (with mirrors) be the only way to do this? The other option would be to use the peep mirrors, but I like the original style. Steve

The measurement off existing would work (assuming they are correct). I have a template I could email you for this purpose from a factory mirror option that will get you on the mark. I would print and mail you a copy but I am leaving the U.S. for a month today. The other option is to get inside and drill out using a small pilot bit, carefully of course.

A slick trick is to use an automatic center punch from the inside of the cab. There is a reinforcement bracket on the inside which has the holes for the mirror. Just place the pointy end of the automatic center punch in the middle of each hole and push until it unloads its force and makes a dent which you should be able to see on the outside.

Thanks Carl, but maybe I was not very clear on my post. I understand what you said about the reinforcement bracket, but it was covered when the new inside cowl panels were installed. They should have been cut off a few inches at the top. Steve

....maybe a stupid question but can you cut some of the top of the panel off with some tin snips?

Not really stupid question. As a matter of fact, that's a good idea. Getting in there might be a challenge though. Steve
