I love your write ups on the truck. I admire your fab skills and ingenuity. I grew up in Stamford, NY about 75 miles southwest of you. My brother graduated from RPI.
For my last assignment, I was stationed in Independence, MO. I was literally a 10 minute drive from Jim Carter's. I made that run many times working on my Burb. Classic parts was about a 40 minute drive and if I was really motivated LMC truck was about an hour away. I was spoiled rotten having three major parts houses within easy commuting distance. It will suck when I get back to the states and have to wait on the brown truck like everyone else. At least I'll be able to work on my truck again. It has been in storage for a year while I'm overseas.

Jim Carter to the rescue again...about $175.00 for cross sills and all the mounting bolts and blocks too... front panel is now part of the rear panel just ordered up another $400.00 for all the wood boards for the bottom with the hardware too...been a really expensive week for truck parts... another view here Not sure what a 1 ton Chevy (9 foot box too)truck is worth but hoping someone will want it when I am done...it should look like an old smelly truck when I am done with minor upgrades to make it more driveable..... I am rat rodder at heart so I love to keep stuff kinda rough and let the natural finish happen....every time my wife comes out and looks at the truck she is like..."oh you better get some paint on this metal".....I wanna leave it natural....maybe throw some brushed on rustoleum like they used to do back in the good ole days...this truck is a smelly old truck just like his owner is...
Thanks guys for all the comments...I am hoping next to be getting some crusty old running boards and stretch them to fit the 9' long box on it...right now I have the short dump box style running boards and then a big gap where there should be something else...gotta line on a pair of suburban running boards that I think I can make work....only time will tell....

Oh yeah...I also got the rear tail lights mounted....had the newer set from a previous project and I can almost bet they will be brighter than the little stock one was... before and after here... Started to bleed brakes and one of the CPP brake calipers was leaking like a sieve....talked to the tech guys there and they told me I think it was $75.00 for another caliper (and 5 to 7 days before it would ship)...so I asked what their kits were based off of....I was told a 1978 C10 Chevy truck...so I went to my local Advance auto and for $32.00 including a core charge I was up and running...their caliper where the crush washers mount was cut wrong so when you went to tighten everything down it would leak....still need the wife to help bleed them out tho... As always...cant wait to get it running and out of the garage... MikeC

Can't stop now! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,952 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,952 | If its not the chicks its the older hens who will say the learned to drive on a truck like that which their dad owned! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 321 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 321 | Been cuttin and fittin again...most of last and this week too...had bought a pair of usable fenders from a fellow in Utica NY...got one side roughed in... before another before another before So my prize cob of the week is the bottom of the rear fender...it didnt have a bottom lip....I had some brake line that I bent to fit the bottom lip in process cob job... after cutting and fitting I basically had to cut and fit a new metal flange lip for the fender...I have no holes in the box sides yet so it the new holes are off a little so be it.... a little blurry.... here is the rear of the fender flange.... after cutting and fittin running boards arrived via the Fastenal Company...they came from Michigan....I have so many parts from so many trucks...I am loosing track of what came from where...oh yeah the running boards are from a 1/2 ton short bed.....so...we will be cobbing again...taking the front of the 1 ton running boards and adding the 1/2 ton ones to fill the gap.... cant wait... It is an old and smelly truck...old trucks dont get paint. I did do some rattle can hunter green on the cab corners where I patched them. I will do the same where ever I patched stuff...a little rattle can here and there (gotta cover all those bullet hole patches). It will have a light blue rear fender, maroon box parts, rusty green tail gate, the rest of the truck looks to be sun burnt grey primer...I see hints of some sort of green where the tilt bed was once...
My wife wants me to paint it too....me I am not painter...I cut...I weld...I grind...I cut ...I weld...I grind...

This week I gotta get the running boards fit and tacked in place.... Cant wait to get it done...money tree is getting really thin about now...still so far to go...so many big money parts left to buy...:( MikeC

So it was a long evening spent cuttin and fittin...but now I can say that I made one 1/2 of a pair of 9' long bed 1 ton running boards all by myself... I am waiting for the new old running board brackets from a guy on facebook...then we finish welding the old to the older... holey family...I thought this stock stuff was gonna be way easier than it has been...I am learning everyday on it... So I received my running board brackets from Florida so I can start to hang my 1/2 ton 1 ton running boards...I learned that every single bracket was at a different angle and a different length too...I guess the 1 ton frames rails are more parallel than are the 1 /2 ton ones.... Oh yeah the fun part....I swapped out way back last winter the old school 1 ton springs that weighed a ton all by themselves and I thought I would be smart I went out and bought a pair of 1/2 ton rear leaf springs off of a 1990's Chevy pickup truck.... Running boards have no place to mount with either spring set up so I got my trusty angle grinder and cut up all but one of those 6 brackets that I got from Florida.... before origami ... drivers side passenger side.... oh yeah I added a total of 4 new to me running board brackets to the truck..nothing is mounted but stuff is mocked up...running board undersides needed some trimming too....more photos to follow when I get them done hopefully early part of this week... Still a cuttin and a fittin... Oh yeah...cobbing up some rear fender inner brackets from a pair of 1991 Chevy S10 front bumper brackets...gotta get pics of that mess too...I have one side mocked up... MikeC P.S. cant wait....

Been cuttin and fittin...had some 1980's ish S10 front bumper brackets laying in my metal pile...I saw that I had a mysterious hole in the bottom of one of my rear truck fenders...the other one was rotted off...so I got to hammering on it... before the cuttin started mounted inside shot running boards are all bolted on.... inner super cobbed running board bracket... passenger side shown here.... my awesome driverside fender... had to show it.... I was getting really busy tonight too...I had to set the toe on the front axle...it was 1/2" toed in...not what I was looking for...so I took everything apart...turned the passenger side tie rod in just about all it would go in...went to put the steel wheel bake on...stripped another stud on my nifty CPP disc brake set up that I bought last winter... #1 & #2 stud shown here I got out the good ole "JB" Weld and I am praying it will hold...if not...I will be ordering another pair of bearings and go back and use the stock steel hubs that came with the axle I had... If you do buy a CPP kit...be very cautious with it...the design seems ok but darn...the calipers suck big time as does these aluminum "upgraded" hubs... my 2 cents... Keep hammering brother! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 321 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 321 | It has been super hot and humid around here but I kept cuttin and choppin...I ordered a pair of Altman latches to replace the beat stock ones...neither door would stay shut...I have heard more stories about these old trucks and the door popping open...I solved that problem once and for all... look where this thing is made....USA all the way passenger side all installed.... I was not looking forward to doing this job as I have never ever understood how door latches are supposed to work...but...I followed along and look... passenger side door....and look...it shut...yippee my only complaint about it was the striker tab inside the door was about .25" to .38" too short.....so I had to had a little metal so everything would work... you can see it installed here... I shot another photo of what I had to do to get everything to work... striker side here... here is the back side... so next is to get window channels and some other door stuff....Jim Carter to rescue again..... So for the first time since I dragged it into the garage ....Howard Knapp has doors that shut and stay shut... One more step closer... MikeC this is what my wife calls me...

Cant wait to get it done... Picked up a Dodge Neon that is a half done race car...that looks like way more fun this project does.... MikeC

Keep on trucking brother. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 321 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 321 | So I don't believe in making a 62 year old truck look new so I wanna keep it looking its own age...I got busy with the power wire brush and got the drivers side all shiny but still rusty for texture... rear quarter view and then another view from the drivers cab side... another view So far 3 cans of rustoleum have been used....truck box is all "hunter green"... my goal is 50 foot truck when we are done...something the original 80 year old Howard Knapp would have been proud to drive around our then very quite little town of Round Lake and Maltaville NY... The truck came with this funky grey primer on the cab...I pour some lacquer thinner on a rag and rub the primer and I am coming up with a very aged green truck cab in spots...I will continue to rub on it in hopes of saving as much of the original finish as I can... a little rattle can to fill in where needed... My Juliano seat belts came in late last week..if you order a pair, don't waste your time with the instructions that are included in the mounting kit...go right to the website one of the guys on here did and awesome job documenting how to mount these belts up in a AD style truck. I scratched my chin for one whole evening and then I went on line and found a link to those instructions... the female end of the belt... the bottom side of those above... driverside door pillar driverside retracter mount All done... I was proud...made in the USA and everything...not cheap but once I saw the quality the old adage is "you get what you pay for".... Oh yeah I am finding some of the old green paint on this truck...and I am going to keep like it is... and it still shiney... new fuel tank and wiper conversion kit next on the docket... Money tree is still holding up... MikeC

Still waiting for parts...did get a note from Jim Carter saying stuff is finally starting to ship...over $500.00 in parts....also while I was waiting...went to the local craigslist and found a class III hitch off of a 1990's Chevy truck... after I took it apart..... took the side plates off as they looked kinda rusty....half a day on Sunday grinding and wire brushing and then 2 coats of rattle can grey rustoleum... side plates Was bored again...so I bought my 3rd gallon of laquer thinner and I am actually looking at the original 1953 Chevy truck green... drivers side.... So the muffler is on the way.....windshield motor conversion and hopefully most of the gas tank parts too.... Cant wait to get this truck done....13 months now....still sitting the in the same spot... MikeC Anybody done the wiper conversion on one of these trucks? any insight would be awesome....

A really big box to fit this piece in.... all new hoses too.... vent and fill hoses Newport wiper conversion is not going too well....numbers all match up but the part wont fit....gotta email into Jim Carter and to Newport Wiper folks too... getting closer.... If you are still wondering about the front driving lights, they are working properly. Though they are commonly called running lights, they are actually just parking lights. They only function when the light switch is pulled to the first stop. That gives you rear parking/tail lights and front parking lights. When you pull the switch all the way out, the headlights come on and the parking lights in the front go off. I had the exact same question on my 58 Burb. I even went and bought a new light switch from Jim Carter just to have the same issue persist. I posted the question on here and was straightened out by a fellow bolter. If you do a search on here for parking lights/driving lights you should find some info. There is a way to create two small bridge wires between the posts on the light switch to keep the parking lights on when the headlights are on. Its a simple fix.
I'm not sure about the dome light. I think it should work when the lights are off. Best to post the question in the Electrical forum.

I got the rear window installed in the Howard Knapp truck...I wanted a rear slider for better in cab air flow...I went and spend bought one from Jim Carter truck parts....and with the gasket and shipping I think it was right around $200.00 all done now for the bad news...dont waste you money on this window....it does not fit... top right gap top left gap not sure what the deal is again...I sent an email note off the Jim Carter truck parts.....dont wanna rip it back out.... find another vendor on this one for sure... all my other glass I ordered from classic industries ...should be here by next week....2 sides....2 wings...and both windshields too....a couple of gaskets too....less than $300.00 shipped to my door...wish me luck on this part...never done a windshield before.... cant wait to get this thing done....super tired of working on it.... Make sure its lubed up good and pay attention the corners and the center strip.
Its not a hard job, just take your time and be sure to "lay" the sealer to it as recommended in the repair manual.... and if you have the stainless trim it must be put in the rubber gasket before putting the windshield in the truck. Fit it all up good and let it "form" for a day.

As I toil on Howard Knapp and I can see the end of the stupid spending of money on this truck and this happens....while taking the center chrome strip out the bottom screw snaps off... yea old piece.... So I get online and order from Classic Indutries a new center bar with some screws to fasten it back on the truck... brandy new piece and the kicker was the cost for one broken #10-32 screw... shipping cost sheet... so in the end $47.93 for a screw.....hmmmmm been on it hard the past couple of days with glass and rubbers showing up... Cant wait to get this thing done.... MikeC

It's about a 10-minute job with a center drill and a good drill press!

Jerry Hey Hot Rod....never even thought about that...I am a grelder....I grind....I weld....I grind more...I weld more...I repeat...Also I thought that the head on those screws was something special...no??? Hoping tonight tho...getting the "newport engineering" finished wiring....then trying to con the wife into helping with the windshield so then the cab will be weather tight... Thanks for the thought tho....my mindset is order new rather than try to fix the old stuff...I can count on almost every night I work on this thing I will snap off something so then I go inside and order up another one...my patience is all but gone for this truck.....I just want it out of the garage now...the fun went away when I hit the 1 year mark on this rebuild...
