I'm guessing the reason the OEM setup used the long/modified draft tube is to let the oil run back down to the crankcase.

I've also woondered how effective adding a couple lifter valley stand pipes would be to the 235. http://pitstopusa.com/i-5070741-allstar-performance-sb-chevy-lifter-valley-vents.html

When looking at the bottom end of my 235, there isn't really any direct paths from the valve cover to crankcase.
