Going from 4.11 to say 3.55 is "raising" the axle ratio, or "taller" gears. Counter-intuitive, but I believe I have that correct. Sort of like saying "lower" the a/c to make is cooler.
Ipe (E-pay) is a very dense (it sinks when placed in water) south American wood generally used for decking material. The life expectancy of Ipe when used for decking is 50+ years without any stain, paint, sealer of any kind. Very much harder/denser than oak. Dimensionally stable. Starts off with a redish/mahogany color, but quickly weathers to a uniform gray color. Ipe is also commonly known as Iron Wood. Fasteners (nails or screws) must have pilot holes otherwise, you are NOT going to drive them into the wood.
