I test products for a living. A few years ago a commercial kitchen hood manufacturer decided to try a 3M double sticky tape instead of continuous welded seems. We ran the hood through a series of grease fire tests. There was no grease leakage and all the joints were liquid tight at the end. The tape is used to manufacturer aircraft. The hoods were stainless and galvanized steel. They gave up when trying to align 16 ft lengths of steel any error and they had to scrap the parts. Adhesives can be stronger than the base materials.
