So, I got some work done today on my motor. I was able to get the harmonic balancer off as well as the oil pan and the last two bolts off of the timing gear cover. ...and there it was, as most of you guys suspected, a gear with about 14 teeth missing. I'm not sure why my 1954 truck has a fiber gear since I have been told that the serial numbers on the block and head indicate that it is 1960 truck motor. I know that they are supposed to be quieter but less reliable. Who would want this trade off?
So next step is to remove the gear. Is there any way of removing the gear without removing the cam shaft? I have felt in the holes on the gear and I feel a philips screw head in there. I'm still waiting on my manual in the mail and I would like to keep working. Any pointers? Thanks again guys.
