It sounds like you just have a really nice running old worn out motor that needs an overhaul to me. If you replace the rings, you might as well replace the rod bearings, then you might as well replace the mains. If you're going to do that you might as well get the crank reground and a valve job. Heck, might as well bore the cylinders to the next size while your at it.
