Just a thought on the exhaust and steering... My 59 GMC came from the factory with the poncho based v8. In order to clear the steering gear, the factory installed 2 right side exhaust manifolds. In other words the driver side is now a front dump exhaust manifold. Maybe you could swap the manifolds to get the exhaust around the steering gear... if that was a problem.
