Thanks for all the posts and suggestions, information, and so on. My '38 steering box has no ball bearings, just bushings. I have tried 90W gear oil mixed with cornhead grease, I have tried just 90W gear oil, I have tried just cornhead grease. The problem seeems to be when the box gets hot from the exhaust pipe heat the lubricant thins out and leaks out the side cover plate, I am using the new type seal on the pittman shaft and that does not leak. Years ago I used the cork seal there and the 90W leaked out there too; so now one leak fixed but still working on the other one. So I'll give it another shot and clean out the cornhead grease and use the gear oil resistant sealer for the side cover plate.
