Couple thoughts. That carb should do well with that engine out of the box.
There are some adjustments to that to help with the quitting into gear.
What Jerry said 2nd post, the timing set is crucial and not an easy thing to do alone. Engine needs to be at 3100rpm.
I can say that once I had my 327`s timing set proper, It starts much better now. Idles smoother.
