I was thinking I’d use the hoist to work on the bottom. I thought a stand would be very expensive. As you said, convenience & safety should come first.
The first rule of lifting things: Never put any part of your body under the load.
Working on the bottom of an engine hanging from a hoist if a BAD idea. Buy a proper engine stand.
