I had a severe problem with heat soaking a full size Delco starter on a '55 Chevy w/full length headers. Didn't have much success with a wrap around heat shield. Just the proximity was to close. As mentioned...switched to a high torque mini starter.
Also, for the sake of conversation what condition are your plugs in? Their appearance can diagnose what you can't see or what you are guessing at.
