Where are your jack stands located- - - - -axle housing or frame? A friend back in high school was pulling the trans of his 47 Fleetline 2-door to change the clutch, and unbolted the torque tube with the rear end supported by concrete blocks, not jack stands. That put some pretty severe down pressure on the tube. The torque tube slammed down when he unbolted the U joint, and pinned him under it, and then one of the cinder blocks broke. He got away with a few broken ribs and some pretty colorful bruises, and a whole new respect for the weight of a car! Be sure your frame is supported, with the rear end hanging free before you start manipulating the torque tube up and down.
