Other than making a little noise, it won't hurt the lifters to back off the adjustment 1/2 turn or so to be sure the valves are seating properly. Ignition timing is easy- - - -get the #6 cylinder valves "rocking" (exhaust closing and intake opening), and time the spark to fire the #1 cylinder. With the BB/pointer aligned and the #6 valves rocking, turn the distributor housing clockwise until the points close, and back up CCW until they just barely open. You'll be timed close enough to start and do a 20-minute cam run-in. Have a big fan or a squirrel cage blower handy to aim at the radiator- - - -the fan probably won't pull enough air by itself.
