Today I decided it was time to start my rebuilt 1960 235 for the first time. Ran the oil pump with my electric drill, re-installed the distributor, set the timing, put some gas in the carb bowl, dropped a temporary gas line into a can of gas, hit the starter.
It did not start, but I think it fired some, got some puffs of smoke out of the exhaust.
Rechecked the timing, point gap, tried again, still no start
I'm wondering if I could have a problem with valve adjustment. It's got hydraulic lifters, and they seem to be pumped up.
Or is it possible I have the timing off 180? I don't know enough to diagnose this, wondering if anyone can help me out with suggestions.
I am afraid to crank this too much, worry about messing up cam shaft!

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again.
