That wobbly distributor shaft sticks out like a polar bear in a coal pile if you're using a dwell meter instead of a feeler gauge to set the point gap. The dwell meter needle jiggles all over the place at idle, or even while cranking the engine without starting it. I had a Ford 302 engine in a F-150 with a distributor top bushing worn out so bad I had to disable the vacuum advance to get home from a 200-mile road trip because every time the vacuum came in off-idle the points would close up and stall the engine! That one was a real pain in the behind to find!
