How about creating a miss on one cylinder by substituting a piece of vacuum hose for a spark plug wire? Another sneaky trick was to use a paper punch to make a round insulator from Scotch tape to stick to one side of the points!

One I learned when I was in the Army was putting a piece of cellophane over a fuel line fitting to prevent flow. The stuff was invisible and usually stuck to the end of the line when the fitting was disassembled if the victim got that far in troubleshooting.
