About 40 years ago, I shipped a salvaged military M-151 Jeep from Okinawa to California as part of a PCS station change with the US Air Force. Somewhere along the way all the ownership paperwork was lost, stolen, misplaced, etc. I ended up doing the bonded title thing, and I believe the California DMV assigned a VIN number to the vehicle. The bond was for the appraised value of the vehicle, and I was required to keep it in effect for 3 years, with no way to sell the vehicle during that time. I purchased what was basically a title insurance policy from a company that also did real estate titles. I think the cost was about $300.00 back in the early 1970's.
