I found this one while I was camping this weekend. 1956 GMC LCF. Pontiac V8, manual tranny, power steering, Hydovac brakes. I'm going to retrieve it in September.

Hey Shane,

Nice truck...is it a live tandem or does it have a tag axle? Does it have the Power Divider aux trans?

As for the new shop...40x80 is to small...lol. No matter how big you build it you will fill it up.

Great find. I need to move East as all I find while camping is Mosquitos or poison ivy. smile

Looks like a fun project....a lot of work...but fun. Are the wheels stuck...or did it just happen to stop with the mud line down on both wheels?

As to the new shop I'm moving from GA to NY....I have a 40x70 shop now and am moving to a 35x39 two story shop frown I agree with the idea that no shop will ever be big enough.

Don't know your site, how you're building, or the layout for the new shop, but if it's not too late you may want to consider going even wider, but shorter. More length can be added on later, but your width will be set. I know 40' seems wide...until you start filling or working in it. My garage door is on the long side so I am pulling into 40' and not 70, so that makes a big difference as well. My flat bed and truck together are about 45' long, big as my shop is I couldn't pull them in together....let alone my '60 R190 semi and trailer. Both would fit the long way....but would also take up a lot of real estate in the process.

Just some food for thought, once the building is built it is too late to change. I thought my shop was huge...until I filled it and only had meandering pathways through it.

How far are you moving....It's never fun. We just came down to GA 2 years ago from Ohio.

Tad,
He pulled it out so I could look at it. Front wheels were off the ground so they did not move. Thanks for the input on the shop. It's going to be 14'high in side so i would still be able to add on to the sides for shorter bays. I could go 18 feet out on both sides and still have an 8' ceiling. Its a small move 20 miles.

That's good, having locked wheels is not fun. They can be anywhere from a big pain to a really, really big pain. smile

That's a good height my shop now is 12' and my next will be about 13'(The shop is now two wooden floors w/the first being about 6' above dirt. I'm taking out the first floor and putting in a slab leaving the second floor) It looks like you've thought out your shop well. I don't know that everybody does, when buying or building. I know I've gone up in shop size 3times and every time I thought it would be great and got filled anyway.

I'm glad your move is short, it definitely simplifies it a lot.

Trans might be a NP-540 series, direct. Nice truck, there is a partly disassembled one around here if anyone is looking.

Shane,

If you have the room take the ceiling to 16', that way you can build a loft giving you 7.5' of ceiling above and below. The lower level can be the tool room, wood/metal shop and above can be extra storage or a trophy room/man cave (that's what I did in mine...it's 15 x 30).

My main door into the shop is 20' wide and 12' tall which makes it easy to drive in.

The only mistake I made was not installing a toilet. I have water, heat and a washing machine. While I had the trench open to bring water from the house to the shop I ran a 1/2" copper line to back feed compressed air to the garage at the house. That way when the wife wants to blow up a pool float for the kids she have it handy.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of the new shop and the project truck...I know they will both be great!

Not so much worried about a loft. I need it 14' so the camper will fit in there. I will have a wall at 40'...40x40 toy storage and 40x48 shop. Ther is already a 24x40x10 high garage, barn and a small garage for a tractor. Plus 2 stalls under the house....lots of room to hide stuff.

Shane, sounds like you have a plan and I hope you keep us posted on the new shop build. They are almost as fun to follow as a truck build.
I had to build my shop (44x60) with a 16' tall ceiling to get the motor home in it. It is just a smidge over 12 1/2 feet tall which dictated a 14' tall door + 2' feet for the track. The cool part about it was after all the planning, how cool the loft I created over my wood shop turned out to be. Once I get the 860 done and the loft isn't full of parts it will become the man cave/drivers lounge!
Good luck on your move.

Shane. The measurements of the emblem on the batwing doors are: 8 & 3/4" full length and 1 & 3/4" tall. Mine look like aluminum painted white.
Hope this helps.

Went and picked it up this weekend. Pretty good trip with no issues. It just fit on the trailer I took. Now I have to figure out what I have and what I am going to do with it. The rear axle is huge and the hydrovac is behind the cab. It also has a reseve vacuum tank connected tot he hydrovac. I believe the tag on the door post said 28K GVW.

I think Hershey is a sell out every year (over 10,000 spaces), but you could contact them to see. You do need to be a AACA member to get a space. I've been going there every year since 1973...this year will be my 40th!

The ATHS Tri State Show every year in Winchester, VA held in late September has a truck flea market that might work for truck related stuff.
