Did anyone ever use a wet sack of Bull Durham tobacco to clean a windshield when it was raining? I always had a sack hanging from a knob in my '51 Chev 2-door sedan in Washington state in the 60s.

Mrs. Wally and I could go to a drive-in movie before we were married and not have to use the wipers to watch the movie. The rain would flow down the windshield in a smooth sheet. Honest, we watched the movie!

Never heard of that one but I have heard of using a raw cut potato.

I'm a firm believer in Rain X.

I've used a bottle of Coke "way back when" to clean the gunk off the windshield so the wipers could work! Never heard about the tobacco....I thought it was boiled and poured down a mule/horse throat to get them up.

....haven't seen bull durham in years. Is it still around?

...cletis, you cold eat a raw irish potatoe to kill alcohol breath, or so I've heard.

I've been told by farmers that rubbing the inside of the windshield with a tobacco plug (chewing) will prevent it from fogging up. Anyone else?

Yep, it's the saliva. That's why divers rub their mask with spit before putting them on. It keeps them from fogging up.

Wally,
You are showing your age. Although I never personally used the tobacco bag for this my grandfather always kept a bag hanging in the truck I am currently restoring for that very purpose. He also always had a Desert Bag hanging on the front bumper.

I haven't used any of the fore mentioned cleaners, but I still use Bon Ami, and only Bon Ami. It will cut thru the road grime, and will not scratch the window, guaranteed not to scratch. A clean window will shed the water.

..back around 1960 my dad helped a friend out at the "Spur" gas station. When it was raining the late night traffic would pull in to the station and buy a Coke and then pour it on the windshield. I thought they were crazy wasting a 7cent coke like that but the folks always said it cleaned the crud off the windshield so they could see. I personally never tried it but lots of folks did it "way back when".

20 years and nearly 2.5 million miles in the KW, and I swear by Rain X, to the point that once I got pulled over in Ohio by a cop because he saw I wasn't using my wipers in the rain. When I explained to him about using the Rain X and showing him the bottle I kept under the seat he thought I was crazy and let me go. Still use it on all of the cars and trucks now as well as the HD.
