I was thinking of painting it with POR-15. Question is would it help if I coated it with OSPHO before painting? Dave

No need, as long as you have loose material removed. In fact, you want surface rust for best adherence results with POR-15.

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 129 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 129 | The POR-15 company sells something called Metal-Ready which they like you to use before you use the POR-15 itself. I think it's basically a phosphoric acid solution. Mostly make sure the surface is clean.

Also, surface rust helps. I would was my parts with water and let em sit for a day and get a little surface rust then paint on POR. Kinda convenient when you lack all the time in the world! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,441 Moderator - The Electrical Bay | | Moderator - The Electrical Bay Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,441 | I wire brushed, ground and otherwise cleaned off all the grease, grime, paint and rust flakes off, then used oven cleaner to get the grease out of the tight spots. I power washed it all, let it sit for a day or so, then treat with the POR-15.. so far so good... (My 39 was treated 12 years ago with very few problems.)
