I've been having some some problems lately with my 283. It has been misfiring at times, and left me on the side of the road the other day. I have recently installed new points, condenser rotor, distributor cap, coil, spark plugs and spark plug wires, but it is still acting up. I just noticed that the dwell angle is not constant. It ranges from 27 to 30 degrees at idle.

I guess I need to replace the distributor.

Doug,
The distributor is like anything else mechanical, they do wear out. Try moving the shaft( front/rear, side/side) and see if there is a lot of movement. If so probably need to replace it. There are bronze bushings in the housing that wear over time.

I replaced the distributor, and it is running great now.
