As you can see, my driver's side wheel bearing has a problem. I've been meaning to replace this for quite a while...... Okay, about 5000 miles. But, just now I did so. A few months ago I went over to the mainland and met up with some of the BC Bolters, and was able to buy a whole spare '49 axle from Hippy (Brian). Parts finally installed today! I fully expect the old bus to ride like a Lexus now.

Yep, square bearings are no fun at all! I tried to stretch one more trip out of a noisy serpentine belt idler pulley on my wife's Explorer, and ended up coming home on a rollback wrecker a few days ago. The bearing locked up and unscrewed the bolt holding the idler on!

....as they say Jerry, "the shoemaker's wife goes barefooted" smile

I learned my lesson when I had to repair mine on the side of the interstate. August, 102degree weather and a hot engine. Fun fun fun, and a few of my favorite 4 letter words.
Jerry, you through kicking yourself. hehehe

When I met my missus, her car was making bad bearing noises up front. I told her she needed to get that fixed right away. A month or so later she asked me to take her car for new tires about 15-20 miles away. I drove her car out there and back thinking it would leave me stuck some where in between. I made it but wouldn't let her drive it until I fixed it. That sound gives me bad memories when I was about 20 in the middle of a snow storm about 30 miles away from home.

I had to replace one side on my 2004 Dodge 2500 yesterday. It uses the one piece Timken hub assembly with non serviceable bearings. Super easy, very little skill required. Impossible to contaminate the new bearings. I can see why its better for the OEM. But for the extra $150 it cost for the hub assembly compared to wheel bearings and seals, I'm willing to touch grease and pack my own bearings, like on my beloved stovebolts.

Leon

I now have a very quiet car, the shop said the wheel bearing had water in it which made for some nasty brown grease.
I'm guessing the seal wasn't doing it's job.
It's a double row ball bearing all in one piece withe seals both sides. Pretty simple other than it has to be pressed in and out of the steering knuckle.

Interestingly, I never could hear my bad bearing, except with the engine off, and turning by hand. I've known about it since I started driving the truck though...Just kept checking to see if it was getting worse.... It is nice knowing that its fixed though!!!
