I tried to stretch one more trip out of a noisy serpentine belt idler pulley on my wife's Explorer, and ended up coming home on a rollback wrecker a few days ago. The bearing locked up and unscrewed the bolt holding the idler on! Jerry

August, 102degree weather and a hot engine. Fun fun fun, and a few of my favorite 4 letter words. Jerry, you through kicking yourself. hehehe | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . I told her she needed to get that fixed right away. A month or so later she asked me to take her car for new tires about 15-20 miles away. I drove her car out there and back thinking it would leave me stuck some where in between. I made it but wouldn't let her drive it until I fixed it. That sound gives me bad memories when I was about 20 in the middle of a snow storm about 30 miles away from home. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 487 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2005 Posts: 487 | I had to replace one side on my 2004 Dodge 2500 yesterday. It uses the one piece Timken hub assembly with non serviceable bearings. Super easy, very little skill required. Impossible to contaminate the new bearings. I can see why its better for the OEM. But for the extra $150 it cost for the hub assembly compared to wheel bearings and seals, I'm willing to touch grease and pack my own bearings, like on my beloved stovebolts.

Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | I now have a very quiet car, the shop said the wheel bearing had water in it which made for some nasty brown grease. I'm guessing the seal wasn't doing it's job. It's a double row ball bearing all in one piece withe seals both sides. Pretty simple other than it has to be pressed in and out of the steering knuckle. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 | Interestingly, I never could hear my bad bearing, except with the engine off, and turning by hand. I've known about it since I started driving the truck though...Just kept checking to see if it was getting worse.... It is nice knowing that its fixed though!!! | | |
