On my 46 216 1/2 the clutch always slipped since purchased a couple of years ago. I thought it was just age. I have to change the rear freeze plug so I bought a clutch assembly also. I pulled all the needed stuff and used a tranny lift from Harbor Freight. I got the pressure plate off and the clutch disk came out but someone installed it backwards. The shoulder to the input shaft was pointed to the torque tube and the flush part of the disk to the flywheel. Well this doesn't let the disk seat firmly to the flywheel. The flywheel bolts were slightly ground down and the springs circling the clutch disk were ground also. I could always hear a rattle sound when I depressed the clutch so this must have been the disk scraping against the flywheel bolts. Gee I wonder what it sounded like just after the install.

probably the wrong parts because it was installed correctly. Look closely at the disc, some manufacturers label the discs "flywheel" side,

In most cases, if the springs hit the bolts, the flywheel has been turned past it's minimum thickness.

It was backwards, the hub with the springs in it fits back into the pressure plate.

HI,

The clutch disc or fiction place hub should face the rear of the truck.

It could be that someone previously installed the wrong clutch disc. In some of the early clutches that I have replaced there are no springs on the clutch disc.

The newer style heavy duty clutch discs have the springs mounted in the center of the clutch disc to reduce torque surge.

You may need to change the clutch disc to the older style without the springs.

The clutch disc hub faces the rear of the truck.

Also, as stated above some one may have taken to much material off the flywheel face when resurfacing it.

Hope this helps...
