For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 6 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 6 | I am looking for a project to restore to almost completely original for a daily driver. I like the 1940 to 1953 Chevy 1/2 ton. So here are my questions: - Which one would be the least expensive to rebuild? - Which would be the most expensive to rebuild? - which would possibly be the easiest to rebuild? - Which would be possibly the hardest to rebuild? My goal is to purchse a workable truck for under $2,000 and put about $6,000 into it. I will do most of the work including paint. Engine work would go to a shop. I am leaning towards putting a CD player in it; 12-volt conversion; dual carbs and seatbelts. Any help would be appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 65 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 65 | Sounds like you want to spend $8000. Also sounds like you're a better body man than mechanic. (like me) I would suggest finding a stalled project that mechanically has been rebuilt for about $4000. (doesn't matter the year of the rig just condition and whats out there) Good luck. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,953 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,953 | I would suggest a 51 and up basically because of the modern shocks and Bendix brakes which are lacking on the 50 and earlier. Much cheaper to replace. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | I'd say the best one YOU CAN FIND, vs. the pile I did. Lots of missing parts, wrong year pieces on one side, fenders looked like bag of walnuts etc etc. Take your time and search. It is a 1959 Chevy Fleetside, 3 window cab. A original Texas truck with 28K miles on the body. It has a newly rebuilt 350 motor and a 350 turbo trans in it with a camaro front clip under it with disk brakes. It is a stalled project that I bought from a guy who paid someone over $15K to build it but then got seriously ill. It comes with all new glass, trim and other stuff (too much to mention or remember). House of Colors paint job and a new Oak bed with stainless strips. $8000. Near Sioux Falls, SD. You would love this truck and couldn't buy the paint job for that much. Paint needs color sanding and buff. It is much more than you could do on your own for that kind of money. PM me if interested. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 6 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 6 | You're right about the body. I suck at engines and don't have any equipment. My Granddad willed me his body tools and I used to work with him on a project. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 6 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 6 | I will keep that in mind. Thank you. | | |
