Going to order some rivets to reline my brakes on my 1 ton. I was able to find some old Greyrock already predrilled. The box calls for no. 4-6 rivets. In the 1/2 ton trucks it looks like they used 4-4.5 rivets. Anyway should I get brass or steel?

If you are having a hard time getting rivets and have a small aircraft repair shop around, they do all there own brake work and i would think that they would have the rivets.

1 ton trucks (AFAIK) don't use riveted brake pads - they're bonded.

Bigtonka, I'll have to check for that by pulling the hub off. I hadn't done that yet. The box of Grey-Rock "balanced" linings is labeled with "1946 1-ton truck". But what you said may coincide with the fact there are no rivets mentioned in the parts book for my trucks. There are some for earlier pre-40's trucks.

Checked the rears and they are riveted. Brass or steel?

I use one with a .401 Parker shank that fits in a pneumatic rivet gun. An air chisel will not work because it is not controllable enough. I have seen these type of rivet sets rigged up to work in an arbor press.

Sorry - didn't mean to misslead you - perhaps that changed in 47? My 49 are bonded.

Both bonded and riveted have been available for years and I highly doubt there's any ADs around with the original brake shoes. We need the guy that installed them at the factory to solve this mystery.

...perhaps they were riveted to begin with but the aftermarket replacment folks did it the cheap and fast wasy....bonding?

The couple of thousand brake rivets I've installed were all brass, to the best of my recollection. We had a relining machine at the family shop back in the late 1950's. It had a built-in drilling fixture to remove the old rivets, a radius grinder to clean up the surface of the shoes prior to relining, and even a special drill bit to counterbore the lining material for the rivets. We bought bulk lining material in 100-foot rolls.

Brass it is. I see where the aviation and old tractor industry repairs their own brakes/clutches. I got a hand held or bench vise tool they use that's supposed to grind off the rivet, punch it out, countersink the lining, and press a new rivet in. I did see some old hand lever bench top rivet tools on Ebay but the dies appear to be missing. We'll see what happens when I get it all.
