I had a question for the old 283 V-8 guys.
I am restoring this '66 fleetside and on the very back of the engine block by the distributor hold is a very small pipe coming off a brass fitting. Since the motor was out of the truck, I do not know what it is for. Any help is appreciated. Is it vacuum or for some gauge. maybe temp

Gary,

I'm old, but I don't know if I'm a 283 guy or not! For some reason, my brain cells tell me this was a oil pressure tap location. It might have come from the rear cam bearing and gone to a gauge, or had a sending unit in it. I could be wrong on this. smile

Thanks. So it goes to the oil gauge in the dash, but the other end has a brass fitting also that attaches to rear of the engine and that in turn must go down to the cam bearing area? I guess it will work when I get it all back together.

Do you have a picture? If it has two fittings coming from the same port, one is for the mechanical gauge and the other would be for an idiot light showing no oil pressure. A buddy of mines' Vette had that dual set-up,

NO there's only one fitting going into the block.
I would do a picture, but that would mean I would have to actually learn how to put it on this site. which is probably a real project on its own. I did take lots of pictures for my reference when putting it together.

Gary,

I think this may have gotten confusing. The hole in the block is merely a access point to the oil system. You can use it for whatever you want. You can plug it, run a mechanical gauge off of it or stick a electrical sending unit in it. It doesn't do anything....it's just there!

OK, but don't I need to plug this into my gauge in the dash when I get the cab back on? the truck has an oil gauge.
