Ok...a must fix has jumped the list of want to fix's. The tranny is leaking bad at the PTO.

Turns out the reason it wasn't leaking before was because it was practically empty. After filling up last week...adding $$$$ Lucas and running all over heck and Dodge in the last few days....she is now putting all that fresh tranny grease/lube back on the driveway for me.

It appears to be leaking like a sieve...from bolts and around the whole thing. So I am figuring the gasket is gone/done/ruined/old/etc.

Since I have the PTO attached...is the gasket any different than if the cover was on there?
Where can I get that gasket as Napa/LMC don't seem to have one?
Do I make my own out of cork? (Found another thread that said cork installed dry...I'd probably put a thin layer of HighTemp on it.)

What kind of trans is it? There's several routes you can go, you can always just try calling parts stores, you'd be surprised what they have. You can always just make one out of cork. If it was me, i'd just use some hi-temp silicone sealant on it, easiest thing to do really.

You need to be careful about the gaskets on the pto pad, as far as I know the gasket thickness is what sets your backlash on the gearing for your PTO to the transmission. Maybe someone with more knowledge than me can help you with setting up the proper backlash and gasketing on the PTO.

As long as you have a bit of backlash you're OK. Just be sure the gears aren't tight against ea. other. Get some copper wahers for the fasteners. NAPA has them but you may have to look in their paper book of brake parts to find them. They should have the gasket. A lot of this depends on the skill level of who's waiting on you. Doug

Nope...NAPA even took time to call me back...they couldn't find anything.

Hadn't thought about the backlash...that seems scary. ohwell

I have the SM420...I'll pull off the PTO tonight and see what is in there now. Was kinda hoping to drive to work tomorrow to show it off. That may need to wait. frown

It uses the same gasket as the cover. They are pretty thick. You will probably have to buy the whole gasket set but if it comes without the seals it should,t be expensive. I don,t know about the backlash but I don,t think I would put it on with just RTV for that reason. If you use a thick gasket you should be OK. Napa Or Carquest should be able to supply the complete set or you can make one out of gasket material.

Hey Sable surfer...your calling the wrong people. PTO parts are easily available from any Spicer/Chelsea or Muncie powerdrives distributor. Also any truck equipment dealer carries a lot of this stuff if they have a decent parts dep't. Just check out the Yellow Pages for KC. Knapheide, American Equipment, Kranz Automotive, a lot of places have this stuff. Use paper gaskets of the correct thickness, no cork as cork is only for the cover plate. And yes the gaskets do set up the gear backlash so ignore Wrenchbender advice about a "thick" gasket. It'll whine when engaged if it's tight and clatter if it's too loose. Do Not use any gasket goo. Definately use the copper washers and you may even want to replace the studs. It's all pretty cheap. If I'm sounding authoritative about this it's because I sort of am, after 40 years of this stuff. If your still having a problem send me a private e-mail.

Apologies to Wrenchbender.

Check the Filling Station up in Oregon, they should have the gaskets you need.

Ok...got the front of PTO off tonight. There were two gaskets in there...somewhere along the line they doubled up. This wasn't one old one new, they were both the same.

Dave (moneypit) is right, it is a Muncie. Now I have a part number to...PT A2HW. I'll have to look it up.

The bolts were in very loose...I put barely any pressure on them with the rachet and they started spinning. That doesn't seem so right.

I'll definitly make some calls tomorrow to the people Dave mentioned.

Thanks

ps...after getting it off I also ran my fingers around inside the tranny...no bits (whew)...only some metalic sludge which I'll get out of there before buttoning this all up.

There was two gaskets there to set the gear clearance is the usual deal. Paper ones are made in several thicknesses also to make this easier. When you do set the clearance, roll it thru a full turn of the gears checking periodically, some areas may be tighter than others. Given a choice, loose is better than tight. Doug

I just got mine from our local transmission shop. Had several hanging on the wall, no kit to buy. You may want to replace the seals around the output and shift shafts too,

Most parts stores have them just ask for a 6 bolt PTO gasket they come in many different thickness if you are running a PTO get a few of each. You will need them to set backlash. If You just have the cover use the thickest one and call it good. If you are running a PTO mix and match them till you come up with 6 to 12 thou backlash with the PTO bolted to torque specs.

I managed to get 4 gasgets over lunch. Two at .001 and two at .002". That way I can just try to match them up to the ones I pulled off.

HevyHauler...I have now way to actually measure the backlash. There is no cover to take off the PTO. The guy at the shop (Inland Truck) said that I was going to have to use play in the output shaft to judge lash.

(There was one suggestion of taking the tranny apart, pulling off the cover of tranny, but that seems way out of my league.)

All sealed up and seems to be fine...after a couple of trips we'll see if it is still holding up.

I did end up using two gaskets, since that is what came off...on of the 10 thousandths and one of the 20 thousandths. I used permetex spray adhesive on the pto to hold one gasket and on the tranny to hold the other. Nothing inbetween.

There are all new copper washers on there. The old ones were all mangled into the openings and around the bolt head. Hard to find copper washers by the way...all different thicknesses and sizes. Even NAPA had a problem getting 6 of the same thickness. (Used washers that would be used on brake hose.)

The guy at Inland Truck said to torque to 30lbs...so that's what I did.
