Has anyone had the problem of a throttle that is so touchy that when starting off in low gear the truck starts bucking like bucking horse. (I know how to drive stick)the only way to stop it is to push in the clutch and start over again.I'm driving a 1949 3100 216 with a single barrel carb.

| | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | May not be the throttle, there's a possability that you may have a timing issue. It may need to be advanced a bit. Not a whole lot, maybe 5-10 degrees. You'll also want to make sure you have no vacuum leaks.

It was the early model with the thin top. When they redesigned it, a year or two later, they made some modifications to stop the "hesitation". When the car accelerated in low gear, the seat would rock back slightly. This would lift my foot off the throttle. The car would then decelerate, causing the seat to rock back forward. This would drop my foot back onto the pedal, and the cycle would repeat.
Kinda fun when your 15.
I suggest you take a moment to rule out this possible cause before spending any serious time or money.

Granny gears are for heavy loads. On my fire truck with a 216 and Carter single-barrel carb, my engine bucks like you describe unless I have the choke pulled out about a 1/3rd. Clearly a lean condition, working on checking the jets/float.
Try it anyway, see if it makes a difference?

When stopped at a light and stepping on the brake, the engine would speed up. Taking it out of drive and the engine speed would return to idle. The problem was with the throttle linkage, when stopped at the light the engine torque caused the linkage to open the throttle slightly which caused more torque and more throttle.(Justlike a run away Toyota) This was caused by not having enough play in the linkage. Fixed this by adjusting the linkage longer to make more travel in the accelerator pedal.
You might check linkage when the clutch engages,the engine torque may cause the throttle to open and make it difficult to drive. | | |
