Hello Friends,
I have recently registered my truck as an antique vehicle and my insurance company (AAA) has asked me what I consider the value of my truck so they can work with Hagarty's but I don't know what to tell them. My father bought the truck new in 1948 and it has been mine since 1970 and has not been 'restored' but well cared for. It had a paint job in 1992 and has 88,278.4 original miles. I don't drive it a lot anymore but it is as roadworthy as it ever has been. The agent suggested that I go to NADA website http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/1948/Chevrolet/3100/Pickup-1-2-Ton/Values to determine value but there is a very wide spread between low and average value that she can't make an evaluation. What can I do to, where can I go to find a better interpenetration of value? This truck has been a friend to me for so long and I have never put a value on it. Thanks for your direction.

Best thing to do is to get a professional appraisal. However, I have two trucks with Hagerty and didn't need an appraisal. I told them what I think they are worth and sent pictures and descriptions of work done and they approved it. I was working directly with Hagerty though and not an agent.

what Cletis said, plus I'd say that truck should be worth at least the 'average retail' shown at NADA, a pro appraisal would likely be higher

Look for a pro restorer or hot rod shop in your area.

littlebuddie... ask your LOCAL insurance companies for the ones they send folks to. I know that State Farm does it as I have my 37 with them. I took it to one of their approved appraisers, which was NOT one of their adjusters!! The guy took his time and gave me a written appraisal in about 30 minutes. I took it to State Farm with some PICTURES. Good part is the cost, if any, is usually not expensive at all. If I had a HIGH dollar vehicle then I might seek one who does the Rolls,Tuckers,Bently's ect and pay them the big bucks.

Thank you all for your replies and I will follow through on all suggestions. I guess it saddens me that I have to declare a price on anything I love since the value of this truck is metered in my heart.

Another way to assess value, if the vehicle hasn’t been restored, is to search through all the truck sales venues for trucks that would be equal in condition to yours. In other words, if your truck was totaled, what would it cost to replace it with one in like condition.

I should also add that the value of a vehicle that has been restored can also be accessed; it just won't be so easy.

I have Auto Owners and I just told them what I wanted it insured for and sent them a bunch of pictures. No problem. I don't know if there might be a problem if I tried to collect though. Hope that day never comes.

A word of caution. Not sure if it applies to the states but up here if you don't have endorsement 19A on your policy which is a declared value clause then don't expect to receive your full declared amount. Your 10,000 dollar truck is just a 500 dollar one to an adjuster. Documentation like an approved appraisal helps. I learned the hard way!!!

I have Allstate and they use Haggerty and my agent seem to discourage me from using the. i have way more in my 54 than it is worth. i had a professional appraiser but i know i will have to fight tooth and nail to get any near what the appraisal is. the policy is ACTUAL cash value at the time of the loss. i was an agent years ago but i know how they work. my on saving grace is that i have been with them since 1974 and have all my insurance and a lot of my investments with them. as a side note i know they would like me to change my investments, i have a guaranteed 5% and they sending me letters frequently to review it, read change.

I had my truck and now my hot rod with hag...you can pretty well put what value you want to pay.....

they do have some restrictions, no daily driver, garaged..
no amount would really replace what you have but....
I would put about $20,000 and live with it... that is just me...
