Hey Lee, I would go new if it can be afforded. Rebuilts just don't seem to measure up with any carbs out there....that is unless you are willing to unbolt a few and return until you get the right one, or get lucky.

What model carb. do you have? The 67 used the Roch. model B & the 68 up used the monojet. I,m with Tomcoe, The over the counter remans are seldom good. Of all things don,t turn in your old carb. untill you are satisfied with the on you got. What is wrong with the one that was rebuilt?

Lee, I bought a Holley-Weber 2 barrel from Tom Langdon's Stovebolt engine co. for my GMC 270 and it works great. Be sure to buy his linkage kit. Runs well, modest improvement in power from the 1-barrel.

Ditto on the Holly/Weber from Langdon's. I bought an AutoZone rebuilt Rochester...$109. opened the blister packed carb in the store, only to discover the choke circuit had been incorrectly installed. The manual choke would not even close. I took this as a "sign". Bought Tom's H/Weber setup. Out-of-the-box it was great...the truck runs, and idles like a swiss watch. Tom's setup was a few dollars more...you'll probably want to spring the $12. for the water choke heat to 12 v electric conversion. I would highly recommend his setup if you are interested in improved drivability. I've got pics of the carb and linkage setup in my webshots "shoebox". Hope this helps.

Has anyone adapted the 2GC Rochester to the Stovebolt engines? I'm thinking a slight manifold flange modification to a 4-bolt, 2-barrel base flange wouldn't be terribly difficult, and one of the small-bore 2-barrels like the 265's and 283's used would be about the right CFM. The 261 I'm planning to build would probably benefit from a setup like that.

The carb I had rebuilt still seeps ever so slightly around the gasket in the middle. The linkage need replacing anyway and this was the second or third or fourth rebuild on this carb before I go it, I am sure. I just know that this carb is going to be trouble. It is nice to have a bit later engine which I am sure is a recent rebuild. I am thinking of A/C (I am in Florida) after a repaint and so I want to settle any performance issues first. Thanks.

Where can you buy brand new Roch Bs or Carter YFs? I've only seen remanufactured units available. What is the going price? Remans seem to run ~$100.

My carb is showing the exact same issues as Lee's, and I want the problem to disappear. Any thoughts on B versus YF (besides what was originally installed.)

I hope to buy a carb in the next 10 days, so this topic has particular interest for me.

Thanks for any input.

Bill

If the linkage needs replaced that is one thing. If you have excessive play in the throutle shaft then you may have a vacuum leak.

The seaping gasket is evidence that the float is set just a little too high. Gas shouldn't "rest" on the gasket. It should rest below the gasket just slightly or any gasket on any carb will seap. They aren't "liquid tight". Just resistent to sloshing and keeping gunk out.
