I have a 49 GMC 3/4 ton truck which I believe the commercial diff in it. It has 8 hole wheels. Is there anyone that can give me some info about swapping out the 3rd member to about a 3:42 gear. My diff that is in it now is not a enclosed driveshaft. It is enclosed from the trans to the carrier brg, and open from the carrier brg to the rear end, all stock. Currently it has 4:56 gears.

I found a set of 4:11s out of a late 60s Chevy 3/4 or 1 ton, these were in the trucks with automatic trans. I have heard that the same vehicle but a Suburban had a ratio in the 3s. Best of luck. Oh BTW I ran a wanted ad here on the bolt and found my gears.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

If it is an Eaton rear end, I don't believe you can get anything below 4.11 My 72 K20 suburban has that combination.
