I was really disturbed by something I saw today. Took a COE rolling chassis, that was in my way to the local Recycling center(scrap metal yard), & to my dismay stacked in a pile awaiting the crusher was a 1946 Chevrolet roadtractor complete with fifth wheel. What really bothered me was this truck had a set of extremly "Rare" Dayton Wheel Adapters on the rear axle. This yards policy is once somthing has been purchased by them, they don't resale to any individuals, only other recyclers.

I have seen people scrap $1500 worth of antique truck/car for $150. their too stupid to put it on craigslist or ebay, ect. I guess they just want quick cash and don't care about history.

The problem is that nobody is buying anything. I see vehicles on craigslist for a fair price and the ads run for months if the seller is patient. If they are unemployed and the baby is hungry, times are tough and sometimes the scrap yard seems like the only option. I don't like it either, but unfortunately I don't have the cash or space to save anything else.

Spanky, I don't know about the salvage yards in NC, but in Texas it is illegal for them to sell parts except to licensed salvage dealers. I was a licensed salvage dealer for many years, but I let my license expire at the end of May. My license was recognized by all states. But, I am just tired of regulation.

Yeah, I thought it was a shame, that they wouldn't even sell me the Dayton Adapters, off of it. It took me 20 years, to find the last set, I purchased. The guy that helped me said, he couldn't even get them, if he wanted them.

I'd ask some more questions, is there any chance that another dealer like crenwelge mentioned could be helpful?

I've got a friend here that runs a scrap yard and if there is a "loop hole" in your yard's system perhaps he will fit?

That really is disturbing that they want to or will scrap Dayton adapters, I like them, and know of a couple other people looking as well.

Don't give up without a fight!
Good luck,

Grigg

Same with the crusher around here. Once something crosses the gate, it's history. If they were smart, they would have someone with some common sense put anything of value aside and have an auction on Saturday nights. Not only would it be good public relations for the company, but they would make much more money to boot. Aren't companies in business to make money?

By the way, I never will have that problem Spanky. I refuse to go there. I never set foot in their yard once and have no plans of ever changing.

I'm a state licensed salvage dealer here in Virginia. Just wondering what kind of regulation problems you were having?

It's recycling, we are saving the environment from old stuff standing in the bush somewhere... Using an old truck is saving the energy of building a new crappy truck I wouldn't buy anyhow... =)

It shouldn't be allowed to destroy functional parts or complete vehicles !!

I propose we find a licensed salvage company to employ a few ahh part-time buyers as “The Stovebolt Salvage and Parts” where we can work to keep items and trucks like this out of the scrap ships going to China.

C10, As of September 1, I would have had to register with the Texas Environmental Commission as a storm water generator. My truck yard adjoins a truck stop which I own that has been in the state's cleanup program since 1990. The million dollar cap has been spent and very little has been accomplished. When they examine compliance at the gas station they are too stupid to realize that the skeletons of trucks across the fence are being salvaged for parts. If I register, they will be back there digging and I have been there since 1963. I am sure there is some contaminated soil after all these years My gas stations fall into the state clean up which has a cleanup fund with a million dollar cap. I would have have to pay for the clean up myself and build holding tanks for several acres of runoff water. Also, the limits of my general liability for the salvage business will be raised which also cost money. I will be 67 years old in Nov. and I don't need this stuff. Furthermore, the safety requirements for my trucking business was tightened as the first of June was tightened. All of my equipment is compliant, but the record keeping has gotten even crazier.

I see. Thanks for the reply. I just had to go through the same thing with the DEQ for the first time ever concerning storm water drain off. It is now a requirement with my salvage license renewal, which I recently received.

Don't you guys feel safer though? Uncle is out there looking after you. At least your potential spills can be cleaned up unlike the three card monty game being played out on us over the Gulf spill. No different in my biz...regulations out the wazoo just so the government can employ some folks I wouldn't hire to dig a ditch.

The salvage yard is just spare time/part time. My regular work is Remodeling and Repair. If you want to see regulations out the.... check out the new EPA/RRP Lead Dust Rules out there. Type in EPA/RRP into google and you can read about 10 miles worth of reading material on all the new foolishness out there. Contractors are up in arms, homeowners are going to have to pay double in some cases and older and historical homes are going to drop in price. ...and at the worst time to boot.

Here is the link: http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/renovation.htm

For thorough reading, click on every color hi-lighted link.

Hope they never hit cars and trucks like this for any reason anytime in the future.

Also note the fines: $30,000 or more per day.

....Crazy is putting it very mildly.

I've had the same experience, even at a couple junk yards, many can sell some items, but not others, or they can sell parts, but not whole vehicles (SUPER annoying at times). Also there's a big difference between a recycler and a junk yard, recyclers are typicaly only licenced to deal raw materials to other recyclers/processing plants, no public resale at all. Getting caught dealing to the public may result in fines that can be devastating, and in this day and age it's no worth the risk.

Myself, being in WA, getting a biz licence is pretty cheap, so I could easily get a licence & buy materials for resale. I'd do it too if I had a place to store my parts and moreover had the $$ to buy them. Have thought about it a few times, eps. this last week when we drove o0ut to Eastern WA and I saw all that old iron baking in the desert sun.

I frikkin LOVE the EPA,...
I've had an idea for a DIY auto shop biz for a good while now, even have a place in town that would be perfect for it too. But the killer is the EPA requirments, and of course everyones favorite mandatory rip-off, insurance. It's doubtful I could keep afloat with all that garbage on topo of the assinine lease rates in this area, but when you take into account that a single violation of EPA regs by a customer would sink me. For instance, having a pan of oil with a an oil filter in it sitting unattended is not one, but TWO violations, each could be upwards of $15K, and you cannot challenge them or get them reduced. It's pay or pay more, pick one.

I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just MY opinion!

There was a place in the Denver area that catered to the DIY crowd by renting temporary garage space to them. Had hoists, air, paint booth, heavy tools, etc. but I'm not sure it's still around nor any idea of how the liability insurance was determined or covered. Great idea for those city bound folk who don't have the facilities to DYI. When I painted my truck I "borrowed" a guys paint booth, bought materials, etc from him and he "found" some money under his salad plate at lunch one day....hmmm.

If you think EPA and state regulatory agencies are tough in WA & VA check out CA some time. They have managed to virtually eliminate someone opening a new business. Bush's fault no doubt.

Dave,

The EPA/RRP issue is a Federal thing. Altho I heard some states can actaully have different rules, if they are stricter!

Most states make rules parallel to the Federal rules. However, they are at liberty to make stricter regulations, but not more lenient regulations. In Texas it is enforced by the TCEQ. They have regulated my gas stations since 1988. Three times they have taken me to administration hearings. Twice I received favorable rulings. The third one, they filed for a continuance for the reason that their prosecuting attorney happened to be in jail. That was in 1998 and there has never been another setting. I just don't want any more regulation by these clowns.

That looks an awful lot like a truck that was on eBay a while back! If it's the same rig, or same type, the auction details said it was a dealer option where they put a heavier axle under a 1/2 or 3/4 ton chassis (I dont recall wich) & added the hitch. The trailers were special built for the application. I REALLY wanted to bid on the one I saw on eBay, would make a great hay hauler, hay-ride truck, & parade rig! grin

pretty sure that one was on ebay with a buy it now of 6,000, saw an article on one in wheels of time I think trailer 12ft. Ebay ad saidtruck ran, electric brakes on trailer.

A road tractor of that time would have been based on a 1.5 or 2 ton usually short wheelbase for chevrolet plus aftermarket vendors could stretch frame or add sleepers and axle, more options for GMC

551st3800, I was a licensed salvage dealer until the end of May of this year. I was licensed to sell used parts to the general public. The following are the requirements for a used parts salvage dealer. http://www.tdlr.state.tx.us/parts/aprlaw.htm#2309003 Metal recyclers are not in the parts selling business and do not hold used parts license to sell to the general public. They can however, sell an entire vehicle to a used parts dealer if they have not retired the title.

I sit and face the main road to one of the big scrappers here in KC, more than once I've run out for a "Break" to go and try to talk some JA out of something he was gonna scrap. Never any success but have had a few guys that let me pull a couple pieces emblems and such. This 54 Bus went by one day, I offered him whatever he'd get for scrap plus $100 and later a 12 pack on top of it if he would haul it over to my place instead of wasting it. He told me it had a 261 in it that was a runner the front end looked good till they dropped a car on it. I still get mad when I look at the pictures..

It's strange the guy wouldn't bring it across the road for $100 more.

If I had a lot of money I would have liked to rent a building on each side of the road before where our local crusher is located at and put up big signs: "Stop Here First, We Pay More For Certain Vehicles" Especially years ago when the scrap prices were down and more vintage vehicles were available. That would be one way to beat them. Of Course we can always run Vehicles Wanted Ads, even today.

Maybe the wrong to comment, but to me nearly everything I see in CL is over priced.

What I see happing is that it's advertised for say $1k and nobody buys, you see the adv for a couple of weeks and then it's of to the crusher and they guy gets $150..

Whats wrong here isn't it better to just drop the price and get it sold even if it might sell for just $200 and as a plus it gets saved or at least put to used as parts.

Cheers Dyna

Time is money, people just don't want to mess around, steel is 9 times what it use to be. Ask Spanky about the perfectly good school buses that are driven to the scrap yard
