Well, I'm back at it again. I'm making progress but it seems every time I get to a place where I think I can begin closing up the upper inner panel section I realize I need to fix one more area. I really think when this repair is all done you'll never be able to see the repair which is always the goal.
I bought a driver's side rear fender from a gentleman from Stovebolt. I received it this week, it looks like a really nice unmolested piece. (If anyone has a passenger side one let me know I'm still in the need for one.)
I think my series of repair will be as follows. If anyone sees a problem with the sequence let me know.
- Complete the inside inner
panel welding.
- Add a light primer coat to block sand to look for low spots that may need to be addressed from the back side before sealing it up.
- Fit the lower
corner panel and tack in place
- Repair the "frame side" inner quarter panel (this is just behind the driver's door where the running board rubber attaches)
- Fit the
quarter panel and tack in place.
- Fit the
lower inner fender panels and tack in.
- Fit the
upper fender panel and tack in.
- At this point I'll test fit the fender and adjust as necessary.
- I'm planning on leaving the inner fender panels off until last and welding everything in place to allow access from the back if needed.
- seam seal the seam where the
inner fender attaches to the inner side panel (this seems to be where all of the corrosion began)
- After all panels are welded and seam sealed I'm going to coat inside the areas with POR 15.
- Finally I'll coat the areas I'll be welding with weld through primer.
- Weld up the remaining inner fender pieces.
I know this is confusing but I hope with associated pictures you'll be able to follow my lingo.
