Well, after a couple of months off from working on the burb, I'm back at it again.

I took a course at McPherson college in McPherson, KS in body panel repair. It was a fantastic course and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn a little more about metal shaping and welding. It has laid a good solid foundation for my project.

I was really stuck on how to proceed with the rust bucket. I had cut out all of the metal on the rear inner fenders and had no idea of how to fabricate a new one. With a couple new tools (18" break and shrinker/stretcher). I was able to reproduce the inner fender. I added a couple pictures to my online album. Take a look and see what you think.

I think that was money well spent. A man who can do his own metal work can save a wad of $$ on his project.
I have heard a lot about McPherson over the years. Back sometime ago I think they offered a "restoration class" that I always wanted to take.
Good work. Keep us posted.

Looks real good. Go ahead and make a few extra peices, I am sure myself and few others here could use them, LOL!

Thanks to all for the compliments.

Has anyone had any luck reproducing the inner body panel with the 1/8" inset? I was considering making a temp-let and trying to reproduce it using a bead roller with an 1/8" flange tool set.

Thanks

Looks like your two month sabbatical paid off.

The garage time you lost has been more than compensated for by the knowledge you've gained.

Keep up the good work! thumbs_up

Well, I'm now going to try to replicate the inner sidewall panels that are rusted through. I bought a bead roller with a 1/8 " flange tooling. I believe with this tool I should have luck replicating the panels. I'll take pictures throughout the process to help the next person, if mine is successful. This seems to be an area often rusted but little along the lines of patch panels. Wish me luck!

That'd be great if he did!! I'll check with him. I think when I talked to him about this particular panel he said it was too labor intensive but, maybe he was confused on the panel I was talking about.

Regardless, I have made a little headway on the panel and it has turned out ok. I think I'll either need to change the metal thickness or I'll need to beef up my bead roller. It will take a little refining to get just right but, I'm definitely on track. Here are a couple of photos I shot tonight while trying to replicate the panel.

Nice work. If you keep it up. I will have to have you make the exact same panels for me... my burb is like that on both sides...

If you get good with making the parts I am shure some of us would like to get some.....

awsome work

Well, I'm back at it again. I'm making progress but it seems every time I get to a place where I think I can begin closing up the upper inner panel section I realize I need to fix one more area. I really think when this repair is all done you'll never be able to see the repair which is always the goal.

I bought a driver's side rear fender from a gentleman from Stovebolt. I received it this week, it looks like a really nice unmolested piece. (If anyone has a passenger side one let me know I'm still in the need for one.)

I think my series of repair will be as follows. If anyone sees a problem with the sequence let me know.

- Complete the inside inner panel welding.
- Add a light primer coat to block sand to look for low spots that may need to be addressed from the back side before sealing it up.
- Fit the lower corner panel and tack in place
- Repair the "frame side" inner quarter panel (this is just behind the driver's door where the running board rubber attaches)
- Fit the quarter panel and tack in place.
- Fit the lower inner fender panels and tack in.
- Fit the upper fender panel and tack in.
- At this point I'll test fit the fender and adjust as necessary.
- I'm planning on leaving the inner fender panels off until last and welding everything in place to allow access from the back if needed.
- seam seal the seam where the inner fender attaches to the inner side panel (this seems to be where all of the corrosion began)
- After all panels are welded and seam sealed I'm going to coat inside the areas with POR 15.
- Finally I'll coat the areas I'll be welding with weld through primer.
- Weld up the remaining inner fender pieces.

I know this is confusing but I hope with associated pictures you'll be able to follow my lingo.

Cory

I have made a little more progress on the burb. I cut the old quarter panel out and repaired the inner panel rust and have begun welding in the new quarter panel. It's been quite challenging getting the panel to fit correctly. I've had to make a couple of relief cuts to get the tension out of the panels but, it's coming together. Here are a couple of pictures . After I get this panel welded in I'll begin fitting up and welding in the inner fender panels.

Wish me luck!
