First of all this is a SBC 305 v8 with a/c and power steering...
im getting a ticking sound when my a/c compressor kicks in. as soon as a/c is turned off the ticking stops. driving me crazy... any ideas? no noticeable vibration occurs when the compressor kicks in. i have looked and can not seem to locate the problem.

if it just does it when you turn it on its the compressor clutch "kicking in" or engaging so it will cool. Depending on model and insulation etc some appear louder than others. Mine on my 2000 silverado is getting louder as it gets older!!!

You might add a 2 oz. can of oil charge. Make shure there is sufficant freon in the system.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

yes its only when the clutch is engaged. and stays on the whole time the clutch is engaged... turning off the a/c or turning down the "cool" untill the clutch disengages will make the ticking sound stop...

good idea wrench. i just replaced my condenser and dryer and asked the guy at the a/c parts shop if i should add anything else but he was busy and may have forgot to mention. there is only about 1 - 1 1/2 of the small cans(12 or 16oz) of r134 in the system.

The R-4 compressors are prone to do that. I got a warrantied compressor from a GM tech to replace my locked up compressor, that's all that's wrong with them is that they "tick". Other than that, it works great,

Take a solid bar and put to ear and item making noise while noise is present. It's more than likley a valve that is noisy in the compressor.Like a Dr's stethescope, I use this method to find all kinda engine noise's,from rod bearings to valve /lifter sounds.

After changing out the condenser and dryer did you add any oil to the system this system should hold about 8Oz of oil a good cummpressor should make a whiring sound not a clicking sound usually after a while the click will turn to a knock and then you end up with black death. What color was the inside of your old parts clean or a black dirty color

old parts had clean oily fluid leaking from them. I fixed this at an a/c parts supply in the parking lot. had the old guy help me fill the system afterwards with his manifold. asked him if anything additional was needed... he said system should still have enough oil in it.

TROY old parts had oil leaking from them !!!the receiver drier holds a good part of your oil a few ounces and he said should be? any time a major part commpressor, coils, or dryer is changed oil should be measured to make sure there is enough in the system. your truck holds 5 quarts of oil do you drive it when it has only 2 in it?
