Anyone got a good web site for antique license plates? I need 1948 Missouri Chevrolet truck plates if anyone has suggestions. I went on line and got sent to E-Bay. Is that the onlyplace you can go to find them?
Thanks

Ebay has always been my go-to for buying & selling plates. Most folks that collect them dont give em up easy. wink

I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just MY opinion!

Go to antique shops in your area. The ALL have old plates around here. Swap meets and car show vendors are other options.

Mike,

There are a lot of inexpensive license plates in antique shops around this area. You just have to put in the time looking. Also, their were 2 vendors at swap meet last month in Lee's Summit.

I recently went to the Spring Rod Run in Pigeon Forge , Tn. ! There is a vendor , that comes to the event every year , that refurbishes old plates from most all states . His prices are a little steep ( for me ) but he does a good business and the plates look better than new ! I think I may have his business card but will have to see if I can find it ? I'm sure he probably goes to many other events as well so you might catch him at one near you .

I used these guys for a repro 1976 personalized blue California plate and it was flawless. $75 then, but a perfect match of a genuine one.

You must have two and they have to be approved by the state for use. If the number is still in use, you might not get approval.

You can get a second one made to match the original from one of the above vender's.

You also need to fill out a Year of Manufactor form to get the plates approved.

For restoration of plates, I highly recommend MoJo Art Works in West Virginia. Billy did an excellent job when he restored my '56 VA plates, and I currently have my '56 County Tax Plate in to him or restoration. Check him out at:

Gents,
Good sites posted for old, custom, and remake of plates. It took me time and a lot of searching but finally I found what I was looking for. In my search I also found someone to refurbish them. Within Stovebolt there are articles on doing your own plates. If you have the time and gear then do it yourself but there are people who make a living refurbishing plates.

Good on you for wanting to put old plates on your truck.

State very on the use and registration of old plates. Look up your state DOT and do some home work. I will not registered my truck as a classic or antique because it will be a daily driver.

I was truly disappointed with Licenseplates.tv.

I have a Commercial 1951 California DMV clear plate. Unfortunately I only had one plate. I sent it out to get it restored by someone other than LP.tv. I used Darrel’s in Pennsylvania they told me that they can restore my plate and make a copy. SWEET! But it was super expensive and took about a year and a half and when I got the plate back the copy was molded out of Plastic! California DMV would have laughed me out of the place, and they did! (Hey I tried) Don’t get me wrong it was a perfect copy and if I knew someone that worked for the California DMV that would register it for me it would be a slam dunk and they would look great on my truck.

Disappointed but not defeated I didn't give up and called Licenseplates.TV and told him I found him doing a Google search and explained to him I had a perfect restored plate and I wanted to order a copy and would it #1 be steel, #2 be passable, and #3 would I be happy with it. All 3 yes, so I prepaid (only way they will do it) and when my father shipped it to me (They won't sent directly to the state you live in, they only ship it to someone out of the state you are getting copied to get around the law I guess) I was so disappointed when I opened the package. It is very light I think it might be aluminum. I never did check with a magnet. The back of the California black plate is California yellow so the DMV will see in an instant they used a California yellow blank, plus the color is off. There is no way that this plate will work either. So about 300 bucks later now both disappointed and defeated I threw all 3 of them in the drawer and bought a set from a collector on EBay. Not the COM set like I wanted that originally came on a pickup it was a car set but DMV didn’t care about that when I registered it. So I now have a registered 1951 California black with 1953 tabs completely registered. That is my 2 cents. It would have been a lot cheaper and less aggravating if I just bought the set from EBay outright in the beginning.

That’s my 2 cents in case anyone was wondering.

Click on where it says "more Pics on Flicker" The first 6 are pics of the plates I am talking about.

Check it out and you'll be surprised. Both by the prices and the quality.

Times two if you need two plates.

Here is another good resource for authentic used plates.

They quoted me $100 each IF I buy two. $125 to buy just one.

I am using 1955,Ohio farm plates on my 55 2nd.Farm plates are no longer used in Ohio,so they are quite a conversation piece at the cruisins and shows. In Ohio you have to buy historical plates then have the year plates added on to make them legal. Cost is less than $20.00 for a 50 year registration. Not too bad.
