Despite its good qualities I would like to exchange the oil bath filter for a conventional style with a filter. I have seen the little ones offered by many suppliers but is there something a bit larger in diameter? Something about 8 inches?

This subject came up here maybe a week ago. Believe you can just pull the guts out of the oil bath and replace with a modern paper filter and slap the lid back on. As to the correct size, don't know. Search posts from last week or someone will come along that knows.

If you do the "conversion" method I would find another used one to gut and clean up and use. Retain the other in it's original state.

Jim Carter sells a chrome air cleaner for about $30. I had some - they work fine but the look did not grow on me (I am back to oil-bath or oil-bath conversions).

On the same age, he also sells a nice reproduction for the standard-equipment spark-arrestor style air-cleaner.

I replaced my entire oil bath element with a Fram CA148. Fits great!

I guess I should have been more specific when I said I wanted to change. I want to replace the entire unit for something a bit 'sportier' for want of a better word. I am a firm believer in oil bath filters but my driving conditions and mileage don't warrant that type. I would not alter my existing unit as it is in mint condition.

How in the heck do you replace the element? I took mine off the other day to clean and refresh the oil. My element is original and a mess inside from what I could see. Being my first oil bath and original gear; is this supposed to be replaced / cleaned at some point? Hmmmmmmmm
