After looking at all the post on engine Id's I'm confused because not all reference sites show the same info. I'm hoping someone can help me.
I have a 1949 3100 truck. Numbers are as follows. Engine serial #LAQ276I65. Engine casting #3701481. Head casting #3701887. I think I have figured out this is a 235 c.i. with a 1953 head on a 1954 block. Is this a babbit engine or not? Can anyone verify and maybe tell me more info? Thanks for the help!

If it has 2 nuts on top of the valve cover instead of 4 screws on the sides of the cover holding it down its a 216 or 235 babbited eng.

Also the 216s and 235 babbited had the side covers on the engine that go up through the spark plugs while the later non babbit engines stopped just below the spark plugs.

Dont know much about the numbers but someone else will explain shortly.

Jeff

The engine number that is used as your VIN in most states is on a raised boss behind the distributer. Take that number and call 1-800-222-1020 to request your restoration packet from GM. It'll be free to you. It'll have more usable info about your truck than you can believe including the location & decoding of numbers.

It has the 2 nuts on the top cover and the side cover stops below the spark plugs, so looks like a non babbit engine. Good start and I will check on the restoration packets. Thanks!

Guess I'm out of luck on the resto packets as you have to have the original VIN. Mine was reissued and isn't original.

According to the casting number source that I found, that casting number should be a 235 made for 1954 model year.

That sucks. frown Therein lies another downside, although not a major one, to not keeping the original engine.

Are you sure that the prefix on the serial # is LAQ? Could it actually be a G? The only LA code engines I could find listed are 216 passenger car for '53-with LAG being a Flint produced engine.
