saw a post awhile back about get brake shoes relined. ive never heard of doing this.is it cheaper then buying new shoes and if it is were can i get it done at,i have a stock 53 3100

You can buy the reline kits, I have seen them on ebay and they may be available from the stovebolt sponsor vendors. See the stovebolt home page. The tools needed are a good ball-peen hammer and a special rivet punch and your handy dandy bench vice.

The 1/2 ton relined shoe sets are readily available. Sometimes the larger trucks sets are hard to find. You can take the shoes to a brake shop that does this & have them relined, or put the linings on your self like Tmater says, but it's cheaper & easier to buy relined sets.

Thanks guys im going to look around to see where i can get new relined brakes.I just heard about relined shoes and thought if it was cheaper id try it out.

try NAPA.avoid the dust an the rest of the problems.used to do that in auto shop,50 years ago.shoes have too be ground to right angle +trimed.press for the rivets.easy job,but where do ya buy the equiment these days to do the job??? for 1 brake job

There is a company in Houston Tx. They re-line any type shoe and i mean any size. You will have the choice of bonded or riveted. I had a pair of 14"x 2-1/2" Dodge shoes re-lined/riveted for $18/ea. There name is The Heitman Company Inc.

1953mn, don't forget to look around for shops in your area that supply the tractor trailer shops. Go by a shop and ask who is doing their relines. I worked at a transport shop once and we sent our shoes to a place in Charlotte, N.C. They could do about anything like Nick Morpar is talking about. There should be one in your area, or close by that does the same thing?

Bob Adler writing in Vintage Truck some years back advocated the use of thicker linings rather than turning the drums any more than is safe. I believe he had a company in Rochester NY do the work.
