The oil light on my 1966 C10 flickers while idling after the engine warms up. I have a 283 engine with a Powerglide transmission. It only does it in Drive. Could the problem be with the oil pump?

I think I would put a mechanical gage on it to see what was the real pressure.

I do plan to install oil and temperature gauges under the dash, because I don't like the lights.

Doug,

To answer your original question... Yes it could very well be the oil pump.

Had an old Ford Y-Block a few years ago, that started doing the same. Put a mechanical gauge in, which confirmed the problem. Swapped out the oil pump and was good to go.

Got really lucky on that one, as the oil pump was an external version. Never even had to drop the pan.

I think you're plan to install mechanical gauges is probably a good one, as then you'll have a better idea as to what your oil pressure truly is, before you tear into something that may not need torn into.

Good Luck.

False reading, bad oil pressure switch, poor connection, idle to low, fuel in oil (not likely), bad cam bearings, bad oil pump, clogged pick up screen. Any of the above. But the real question is what is the actual oil pressure, this will tell you alot.

low pressure 99% is worn bearings,,, not worn oil pump... a new oil pump wont help bad bearings,, and fact is...oil pumps dont usually wear out,,,(they run in oil)... typically tho ya replace the oil pump at rebuild. its cheap 20 dollar insurance....

Fatweed is right if the oil pump is bad it is usualy caused by lack of clean oil.

If your oil pressure is truely that low, your lifters would be going flat and ticking. I'm betting on a semi-plugged oil sender problem,
Scott

The cause of the problem was that the screen on the pick up tube was clogged. It is OK now. smile
